Used For

Amaryl Tablets are used for the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

They help in controlling blood sugar levels when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient.

Used to:

• Improve glycemic control in adults with Type 2 diabetes
• Support long-term blood sugar management
• Reduce risk of diabetes-related complications when properly controlled

Not used for:

• Type 1 diabetes
• Diabetic ketoacidosis

How It Works

Glimepiride belongs to a class of medicines called sulfonylureas.

It works by:

• Stimulating the beta cells of the pancreas to release more insulin
• Improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin
• Helping lower blood glucose levels throughout the day

This leads to better control of blood sugar in diabetic patients.

Usage and Safety

Dosage

Adults:

• Starting dose: 1 mg once daily
• Dose may be increased gradually at intervals of 1–2 weeks
• Usual maintenance dose: 1–4 mg daily
• Maximum dose (in some cases): up to 8 mg daily

Children:

• Not recommended

Important:

• Take as prescribed by physician
• Usually taken once daily with breakfast or first main meal

When Not to Use

Do not use if:

• You are allergic to glimepiride or sulfonylureas
• You have Type 1 diabetes
• You have diabetic ketoacidosis
• You are in insulin-dependent diabetic condition

Precautions

• Risk of severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
• Extra caution in elderly patients
• Caution in kidney or liver impairment
• Must monitor blood glucose regularly
• Dose adjustment may be required with other diabetic medicines

Warnings

• May cause severe hypoglycemia if meals are skipped
• Risk of hemolytic anemia in G6PD deficiency patients
• Possible cardiovascular risk in long-term sulfonylurea use
• Rare but serious allergic reactions (including SJS)
