How it works

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessels, while valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that prevents blood vessels from tightening. Together, they lower blood pressure more effectively than either medicine alone.

Usage And Safety

Dosage

Adults: One tablet once daily
Can be taken with or without food, preferably with water
Children: Not recommended
Or as directed by physician

Side Effects

Common: Headache, dizziness, fatigue, swelling (edema), flushing
Other effects: Nausea, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth, cough, palpitations, joint pain, back pain, visual disturbances
Rare: Low blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm, severe allergic reactions (angioedema)

Drug Interactions

May interact with antihypertensives, grapefruit juice, CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g. erythromycin, diltiazem), CYP3A4 inducers (e.g. rifampicin), simvastatin, lithium, potassium supplements, NSAIDs, cyclosporine, ritonavir, sildenafil

When not to Use

Avoid in patients with hypersensitivity to amlodipine, valsartan, or related compounds, and in severe liver disease, biliary cirrhosis, or cholestasis

Precautions

Use with caution in patients with kidney artery narrowing or kidney problems. Monitor kidney function and blood pressure regularly

Warnings

Use cautiously with potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics due to risk of high potassium levels
Not recommended for hypertensive crisis
Discontinue immediately if angioedema (swelling of face, lips, throat) occurs
