How it works

Irbesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that relaxes blood vessels by blocking the effects of angiotensin II, helping to lower blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that increases the excretion of sodium and water through urine, reducing blood volume and further lowering blood pressure. Together, they provide an enhanced antihypertensive effect.

Usage And Safety

Dosage

Adults: 1 tablet once daily
Maximum dose: 300mg irbesartan + 25mg hydrochlorothiazide daily
Children: Not recommended
Or as directed by physician

Side Effects

Common: Dizziness, nausea, vomiting, increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine
Uncommon: Low potassium or sodium levels, hypotension, fainting, rapid heart rate, swelling
Rare/Not known: Headache, tinnitus, cough, diarrhea, indigestion, taste changes

Drug Interactions

May interact with lithium, diuretics, laxatives, heparin, digitalis glycosides, antiarrhythmics, NSAIDs, alcohol, antidiabetic drugs, corticosteroids, calcium supplements, carbamazepine, methotrexate, and other antihypertensives

Indication

Used for treatment of essential hypertension
Indicated in patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled with irbesartan or hydrochlorothiazide alone
May also be used as initial therapy in patients needing combination treatment

When not to Use

Avoid in patients with hypersensitivity to ingredients or sulfonamides, severe kidney impairment, severe liver disease, anuria, electrolyte imbalance, or during second and third trimester of pregnancy

Precautions

Correct fluid or sodium depletion before starting treatment. Use cautiously in patients with kidney artery narrowing, liver disease, or electrolyte imbalance

Warnings

Risk of severe hypotension and kidney dysfunction in susceptible patients
Not effective in primary aldosteronism
Use caution in liver disease due to risk of hepatic complications
