How it works

Acylex contains acyclovir, an antiviral medicine that works by stopping the growth and spread of viruses. It helps control viral infections by preventing the virus from multiplying in the body.

Usage And Safety

Dosage

Herpes simplex treatment: Adults: 200mg (or 400mg in severe cases) 5 times daily for 5 days
Prevention of recurrence: 200mg 4 times daily or 400mg twice daily
Children: Under 2 years – half adult dose; over 2 years – same as adult dose
Always use as directed by your physician

Side Effects

Common: Headache, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue
Serious (rare): Allergic reactions, confusion, dizziness, seizures, liver issues, skin reactions (rash, itching), Stevens-Johnson syndrome

Drug Interactions

May interact with probenecid, cimetidine, mycophenolate mofetil, cyclosporin, tacrolimus, and theophylline

Indication

Used to treat herpes infections (cold sores, genital herpes), shingles, chickenpox, and to prevent recurrence of these infections, especially in immunocompromised patients

When not to Use

Do not use if allergic to acyclovir, valacyclovir, or any ingredient of the medicine

Precautions

Dose adjustment may be required in elderly or patients with kidney problems. Maintain good hydration during treatment. Monitor for neurological symptoms in high-risk patients

Warnings

Use cautiously in renal impairment. May cause drowsiness or dizziness affecting ability to drive. Ensure adequate fluid intake to prevent kidney complications
