How it works

Irbesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It works by blocking the action of angiotensin II on AT1 receptors, which relaxes blood vessels, lowers blood pressure, and reduces the workload on the heart. It also decreases aldosterone levels, helping to control fluid balance.

Usage And Safety

Dosage

Adults: Initial and maintenance dose is 150mg once daily
May be increased to 300mg once daily if needed
In haemodialysis patients: 75–150mg once daily
Children: Not recommended
Or as directed by physician

Side Effects

Common: Dizziness, nausea, vomiting, increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine levels
Uncommon: Low blood pressure, fainting, tachycardia, swelling (oedema), diarrhea
Rare/Not known: Headache, tinnitus, cough, indigestion, taste changes

Drug Interactions

May interact with lithium, potassium-altering diuretics, laxatives, heparin, digitalis, antiarrhythmics, NSAIDs, and COX-2 inhibitors

Indication

Used for the treatment of essential hypertension

When not to Use

Avoid in pregnancy (second and third trimester), breastfeeding, or if allergic to irbesartan or any ingredient

Precautions

Use cautiously in patients with kidney artery narrowing (renal artery stenosis) or kidney impairment. Monitor blood pressure and kidney function regularly

Warnings

Avoid combining with ACE inhibitors or aliskiren due to risk of low blood pressure and kidney damage
Not recommended in diabetic nephropathy when combined with similar drugs
Regular monitoring of electrolytes is advised
